Magento and Shopify occupy very different positions in the ecommerce platform market. One is a powerful open-source platform designed for complex, high-volume stores. The other is a hosted SaaS solution that prioritises speed to market and ease of management. Choosing between them isn't a technical question — it's a business one.

Where Magento wins
1) Complex catalogue and product logic
Magento was built for large, complex catalogues. Layered navigation, configurable products with many attributes, tiered pricing, and bulk operations are all handled natively. If your product range is genuinely complex, Magento's catalogue management is hard to beat.
2) Advanced B2B functionality
Adobe Commerce (the paid Magento tier) includes company accounts, shared catalogues, custom price lists, purchase order workflows, and quote management. For B2B ecommerce with multiple buyer types, this saves significant custom development time.
3) Full ownership and no platform lock-in
Your store, your code, your data. No transaction fees, no platform-imposed limits, and no risk of features being changed or removed by a platform provider's product decision.
Where Shopify wins
1) Speed to market
A well-built Shopify store can go live significantly faster than a Magento build. The development ecosystem is large, tooling is mature, and the managed hosting removes a layer of infrastructure complexity.
2) Lower total cost for simpler stores
For stores with a straightforward catalogue and standard checkout flow, Shopify's monthly subscription often works out cheaper than the development and hosting costs of a Magento build — especially in the early years.
3) Simplicity of ongoing management
Shopify handles hosting, security, and platform updates. For businesses without an in-house technical team, this reduces ongoing operational complexity.
When each platform doesn't fit
Magento is poor value for simple stores — the cost of infrastructure and specialist development far outweighs the benefits. Shopify becomes problematic when your business model requires logic the platform can't support: complex pricing rules, unusual fulfilment, or deep integrations with legacy systems.
