The History Of The Biggest Ecommerce Companies In The World Today

The switch from Highstreet shopping to online delivery has been a relatively smooth and rapid transition, as is the case with most things when it comes to the internet. The process of buying products used to be long winded before e-commerce; firstly, we would have to access some sort of catalogue, decide on an item to buy, then visit a store, make a purchase and then organise transportation to get it home, and depending on the size of the product, transportation could be expensive and tricky.

Now, we can click a few buttons on our mobile devices, laptops or desktop and have products delivered from all over the world directly to our doorstep. Some products can arrive the very next day, such is the speed with which e-commerce has evolved.

What are the most successful ecommerce companies?

We take a look at the e-commerce companies that have cemented their place as the biggest and best in the world. Those that have become worldwide brands whom everyone can recognise.

1.     eBay

The buying and selling online site was one of the first e-commerce sites to emerge as a worldwide brand and was one of the first to actually be successful. The company itself began in San Hose, California in 1995 and their unique online auction system with added ‘buy-it-now’ feature was the USP that catapulted it to stardom.

2.     B2W Companhia Digital

Latin America’s largest online retail company and holder of a 50% market share, B2W was founded in 2006 and today encompasses brands such as Americanas.com, Submarino, Shoptime and SouBarato, providing a range of services from telesales to catalogues.

3.     Groupon

Founded in Chicago in 2008, Groupon became the leading provider of online group discounts to the masses for the shopping world. It works by connecting consumers with local businesses via discount codes and vouchers for businesses to increase revenue and consumers to grab a bargain at the same time – win, win!

4.     Rakuten, Inc.

Mostly recognisable in the Western world as shirt sponsors to FC Barcelona, this Japanese company, started in 1997, now operate Japan’s largest online bank as well as online shopping and credit card payments. Today, Rakuten runs around 70 separate companies.

5.     Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

Seen as perhaps the world’s – definitely China’s - biggest online retail company, Alibaba has three main sites; Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com. Their site’s online transactions totalled around $248 billion last year – that’s more than eBay and Amazon combined. It also ranks fourth amongst the biggest tech firms in the world, bested only by Microsoft, Google and Apple.

6.     Amazon

The name Jeff Bezos is known by many as the multi billionaire owner of Amazon, the go-to online shopping portal where you can buy pretty much everything under the sun and have it delivered to your door. The company boasts the largest revenue in the world and even offers online streaming services and monthly subscriptions for 1-day delivery. Amazon itself comes from humble beginnings as an online bookstore in 1994, which may surprise many, and shows just how quickly the company has risen to prominence.

To make it as one of the best online retailers, first you need quality web design. Manchester based website designers Visionsharp are on hand to help you create your dream website and help get your business rolling.
