Common Web Design Mistakes Made By Small Businesses

For small business owners, budgets are tight. This leads a lot of small companies to commit to a lot of DIY web design in an attempt to save money. Web design is a tricky area to get right, especially when you are just starting out.

Web design can easily become overcomplicated, as those attempting to make their business stand out try and include too much into what should be a simple process. By making some of these common mistakes, you set your business back, making your sight invisible online to potential customers/clients, and putting you behind your competition.

But what are these fabled mistakes? We take a look at some of the most common:

Confusing Website

It is easy to look over all the mod cons that you can put into your website and feel like you need them all; after all, the more the merrier, right? Wrong. It is surprisingly easy to overcomplicate your website, visitors respond better to clean, simple and effective designs. If the website is too complicated they will quickly go searching somewhere else.

It’s important to look at your site and ask yourself:

  • Is it too busy?
  • Does it lack focus?
  • Does the site take a long time to load?
  • Is it easy to navigate?
  • Is your service/product immediately recognisable?

Call To Action

Customers aren’t dumb, but they do need a little handholding in the online arena. Your site needs to be able to guide your customers and show them what to do. Your call to action shows customers what they should be doing and where you want them to go. Without an immediate call to action a site loses customers pretty quickly.

When you have a new visitor who is looking to buy, you have to hook them:

  • Make your CTA highly visible
  • Use words that provoke emotion or enthusiasm
  • Give directions for more information
  • Make them feel as thought they will miss out if they don’t perform the action
  • Be creative

Old Content

You must always make sure your content is up-to-date. Your info needs to be accurate about your services and products, whether that is via blog posts or FAQ pages. Pages can go stagnant, so make sure you are updating from time to time.

Blogs are a useful way of updating customers with a flow of fresh content, but make sure you are reviewing your content yearly to ensure you are providing value and not misleading with outdated facts and figures.

If you are a new company and are starting out with your own website, avoid these common web design mistakes and your business will see much more positive traffic.
